After a 0-1 loss in Geoffroy Guichard stadium of Saint-Etienne in the quarter-finals of the European Cup 1976-1977, Fairclough ensure the qualification of the "Reds" against "Les Verts".

After beating FC Zürich in the semis (3-0, 3-1), Liverpool wins the European Champions Cup over Moenchegladbach in the Final (3-1). 

Bob Paisley did not make use of any substitute during the match so Fairclough saw his teammates winning it from the bench.
